Why Hire a Speeding Ticket Lawyer?

speeding ticket lawyerMost people are worried that when they hire a speeding ticket lawyer, they are handing over more money than they wanted, when all the needed to do was pay their fine and move on.

In the state of Pennsylvania, when you are charged with a speeding violation – you are not only receiving a ticket with a fine attached to it. You are also accumulating points on your driving record. These points to not cause you to win the game if you score the most – in fact, if you score too many points you will have your license suspended. Here’s how it works:

Pennsylvania uses a point system known as PENNDOT. This is where the driving record of every licensed driver in the state of Pennsylvania is stored. With every violation that a driver accrues, the points for that specific violation are recorded in their record. These violations and points accrued include, but are not limited to:

  • Failure to stop at a red light – 3 points
  • Failure to yield to oncoming vehicle – 3 points
  • Improper passing on hill – 4 points
  • Improper passing at bridge or tunnel – 3 points
  • Following too closely – 3 points
  • Failure to stop at stop sign – 3 points
  • Improper turning around/illegal u-turns – 3 points
  • Failure to stop at railroad crossings – 4 points
  • Failure to stop for school bus – 5 points and automatic 60-day suspension

Did you read down this list and have found yourself guilty of one or more of these violations? If so, understand what is currently listed on your driving record.

Here Are The PENNDOT Facts

Once a driving record reaches 6 or more points for the first time, the driver is required to take a written examination and will be notified of such, by mail. That driver will have 30 days to respond by taking the examination and 2 points will be removed from their driving record.

If a driver reaches 6 or more points for the second time, the driver must attend a hearing (with TMH Law by your side), and the department will recommend either a 15 day license suspension, an on-road driver examination or have no action taken whatsoever.

If for the third time a driver reaches 6 or more points, the driver will attend a hearing to determine whether or not their license will be suspended for 30 days.

In the instance that a driver is found violating the speed limit by at least 31 MPH or more over the posted speed limit, the driver will attend a hearing to determine if there will be a 15-day suspension or an on-road examination, regardless of points accumulated.
